Being The Zoo

School Kids

Imagine falling asleep peacefully under a large spreading mango tree. There are only a couple other people sitting around and a little ways away the guys and Little Isaac are fixing a borehole. The ground is a little hard, but with a blanket to lie on and a purse for a pillow, it’s so comfy….

It was also on a school yard, and when I fell asleep the kids were all in class. I was still sleeping, but slowly my mind started registering little giggles and low chatter. When I risked opening my eyes, it was to see a circle, at least 3 people deep, of kids all around me. Their dark eyes peered with wonderment into my face, and one or two ventured a small greeting, but mostly they just watched. Honestly, that is mildly disconcerting to wake up like that. Eventually I sat up and helloed them, but the minute I was upright I suddenly got boring, and one by one they drifted off.

When the well was fixed, the whole school was herded under another few trees to hear Lance tell the story of Daniel in the Lions Den. They listened with rapt attention and were very happy.

Prior to the nap we had bumped off into the back country to bring a wheelchair to a boy with Cerebral Palsy.

We got back to Kumi Town for a late lunch at Come Again. The food is local fare, and we indulged in matoke, chicken, meat, rice, sukumawiki and soda’s. Little Isaac kept us entertained with his crazy comments and all around fun spirit.

After lunch we headed over to the Christian Service International shop to unload pipes and generally flooze around. The guys did some small fixing of this and that, put air in a passing wheel chair tire, and drank some ghastly looking porridge that some buddy brought over. CSI builds hand bikes for cripples, and I’ve seen some wheelchairs floating around. They kindly put a bench outside for me and I sat there and was thoroughly entertained by the kids hanging around. One very small girl was fairly nervous of me, and would hide behind her older friends and giggle and point. After a while I pulled out my phone to write here, and that really lit her up. She came right over and started poking on the phone like an expert. When I finally put it away, she discovered my Fitbit and her tiny finger started tapping away on that. That sealed our friendship, and before long she was sacked out happily on my lap, nearly falling asleep.

Trevor had been to a fish market during the day and brought home 18# of Nile Perch filet. They are from Lake Victoria and taste fantastic. The guys got an enormous fish frying operation going, and we feasted on sweet tator fries, coleslaw, fruit and fish. I have rarely seen so much fish. We hardly made a dint on the pile.

Since it seems to never rain here, I thought I could risk hanging some laundry out over night. I woke up at 1:30 am to the patter of rain, and headed outside to collect the stuff. How I love the weather here!
